On August 9, 2018, I had the opportunity of attending an information session facilitated by the Canadian Environmental Law Association and the Friends of the Porcupine River Watershed. The session focused on environmental issues in Timmins and ways to get involved in environmental decision making that affects our community.
The Friends of the Porcupine River Watershed is a local non-profit group dedicated to educating, influencing, promoting and supporting community-based stewardship of natural resources in the Porcupine River Watershed. The Friends of the Porcupine River Watershed are a very focused group with well thought out plans to address many environmental and community needs.
The CELA did a great job of providing information, with an aim of getting more Timmins residents keen on knowing their environmental rights. During the session I listened with intention as many residents of South Porcupine and Porcupine shared their personal experiences of living in the area for many years and the impact that the sewer contaminants in the water has had on their lives. The various personal experiences opened my eyes to a large issue that exists within our community, one that needs to be addressed sooner than later!
As a person of Indigenous ancestry, I completely understand and respect that water is central to life. The relationship between water and health is direct and foundational, all life is dependent on water. Water is critical for maintaining life, as the human body is mostly comprised of water and that without the hydration that water provides we perish.
An article in the Canadian Press, indicated that 22.8 litres of sewage leaked or spilled into Ontario waters in 2017.
That is an astronomical amount!
It's important that residents become involved in addressing issues such as this, in order for change to occur. The positive changes that we make today will impact the quality of life for this generation and future generations of our community. The Friends of the Porcupine River Watershed are open to new members and are having their Annual General Meeting at Northern College on Wednesday November 14, 2018 at 6:30pm.
